BAM MOVEMENT Monthly Inspirational Blog

WOW!! We are in the 2nd quarter of the year!!!
Leading it with the month of April which is called “the open”, and the beginning of it starting with WORLD Autism Day and the rest of the month being Autism Awarness & Acceptance month! For many, this month brings so much joy and fun for the family because on April 2, the entire world gets together to celebrrate the progess we have made over the years with becomning aware and accepting of families and indivudials with Autism. It’s a time where families receive so much more support and love than any other month in the year. Everyone wears blue and donate to organizations that support additional research and providing first time diagnosed families with resources. But once April fades away some of that support, love and attention fades away for families. Some families deal with not knowing how to cope with those feelings of seculsion and isolation because their child is quote, unquote DIFFERENT.

Today’s blog is about tackling that emotiion
and in light of, understandiing and
diversifying you and your child’s purpose. John
9:2-3“His disciples asked him, ‘Rabbi, who
sinned, this man or his parents, that he was
born blind?’ ‘Neither this man nor his parents
sinned’, said Jesus, ‘but this happened so that
the works of God may be displayed in him’”.
When parents receive the first diagnosis it
can be really difficult not to blame themselves.
The parents question what they did wrong in
their parenting or their life that may have
caused this for their child. I am here to say
“you didn’t do anything wrong, mom and dad!
God designed your child exactly as he is. Your
child has a purpose, and I pray that the works
of God are displayed in our children every
day.”

As a special needs mom and sibling myself there are
and will be challenges everyday. I dealt with every emotion known to made when I first got the diagnosis of Autism for my youngest son. I just didn’t understand. I was anger with GOd, but it wasn’t until I discovered yoga that I begin to understand my purpose. I begin to notice that the simple things in life that many neurotypical people can accomplish can be a challenge for a child with Autism. Now I know you’re probably thinking…”what is Autism”, she has mentioned this a few times already. Well Autism is a developmentneurological disorder that affects communication and behaviors. It can cause anxiety and stress with the person who has autism as well as the family. With that being said having different coping strategies is important to ensuring that anxiety and stress levels are reduced. One activity that families can partake in is yoga! Yoga and Autism goes great together! Yoga helps to improve
strength and flexibility, and an increasing sense of peace—children with autism also experience a reduction of pain, anxiety, aggression, obsessive behaviors, and self-stimulatory activities. And there’s more good news. The children are also having greater success making new friends and regulating emotions. Social skills are also an area of deficit for children with autism, and this can be very challenging for families when it comes to outings. For parents it can lead to feelings of frustration, anger and embarrassment when their child has a meltdown due to over stimulation or even anxiety.

Therefore, therapies are always working on
different strategies to teach a child how to
respond to self-regulate their emotions. That’s
why it’s important for parents to respond
appropriately when they are feeling these
emotions because the children are watching.
Children are always learning and with yoga this
an activity that parents and other family member
can do with a child who has autism. Children with
autism have very different sensory experiences
from other people, and these responses often
cause their bodies to get stuck in fight, flight, or
freeze modes that divert blood from the digestive
organs to the skeletal muscles. With practicing
yoga you will see improvement in all of these
areas. You and your child will begin to experience
peace when faced with adverse situations because
you will know how to respond appropriately.

So with all that and having the basics of what autism and yoga
is….try it!! Not only is it helpful for children with autism but it also
helps adults too! Don’t forget about yourself in the hustle and bustle
of everyday life as a parent of a child with autism or any special
needs. Try yoga! Try to practice self-care for yourself and your child
and see the transformation! Try to practice some strategies for
emotional care, physical care, and spiritual care. Yoga combines them
all!! Remember that God said “For I know the plans I have for you,
plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and
a future.” Jeremiah 29:11. Watch how you and your child walk right
into your diversifying purpose once you allow the GRACE of GOD to
take over and steer you onto the right path.

Sending you positive vibes!! Peace, love and the grace of God!!
