Overcoming Domestic Violence
By: Wesiona D. Walker“Build HER Up 23”
Domestic violence is abuse that occurs in a domestic situation including marriages, cohabitation, or family relationships. Domestic violence can cause physical, sexual, emotional, financial, orpsychological harm to the victim or others who witness it.
I witnessed DV during my childhood from my alcoholic grandfather towards my grandmother. I experienced it directly for the first time at age 16 from the father of my child. That was the beginning of cycles of domestic violence in my life. Most of the time I was the victim but there were also times when I was the perpetrator, because hurt people hurt people. At a young age I felt the pain of being rejected, which caused me to feel unworthy, ashamed, angry, and lonely. These emotional wounds left me vulnerable to domestic violence.
My last experience with domestic violence ended in 2017 at the age of 42. Although I had known God all my life through church experiences, I was at a place in my life where I was pursuing Him. I needed to experience Abba through a relationship.
It was in pursing God that Psalm 147:3 became real to me, and God began to mend the broken pieces. It was in this place that God allowed me to experience Jeremiah 29:11. Despite the hurt, pain, rejection, abandonment and fear that had consumed my life – God has a greater plan. God has a greater plan for you too. He desires to heal you and set you free.
